Legia Warszawa was founded in 1916 by soldiers of the Polish Legions (Polish army units based during World War I in the Wolyn region), who formed their own football team, and initially competed against rival army clubs. After the war, the Legion Team - as it was called in those days - was moved to Warsaw and established itself as Warsaw's home team – Legia Warszawa.
In 1927, the Polish First League was established and Legia has been successfully competing in the First League ever since. Legia Warszawa's major success came post World War II, when for two consecutive years in 1955 and 1956, Legia Warszawa won both the Championship Poland and the Polish Cup. Legia Warszawa repeated this success in 1969 and 1970, when it also reached the semi-finals of the European Champion's Cup. After these achievements, it took Legia another 20 years to deliver a success of a comparable magnitude. In the early nineties, Legia Warszawa became again the leading team in Poland, winning the Polish Championship, Polish Cup and Polish Super Cup several times. In 1995, Legia became the first Polish team playing in the UEFA Champions League - going through to the quarter-finals. In 2002, Legia once more repeated its double win of two of the most important Polish soccer trophies - the Polish Championship and the League Cup. Legia furthermore represents Poland and Central Europe in the yearly UEFA workshops.

Although Legia Warszawa is known foremost as a football club, it is worth to mention that throughout its history it has also been active in other sports such as basketball, volleyball, pentathlon, cycling, track and field, fencing, equestrian, gymnastic, and weight–lifting. The total score of awards acquired by Legia's sportsmen include 58 Olympic medals, out of these 11 Gold, 14 Silver and 33 Bronze medals.
